Lateral Elbow Tendinopathy, commonly known as tennis elbow, is a condition where the tendons in the outer part of the elbow experience tiny injuries that lead to degeneration. Despite its name, only about 10% of people with tennis elbow are actually tennis players. It's quite common among mature amateur tennis players, with 75% of them experiencing true tennis elbow.
This condition is also seen in individuals who play sports involving repetitive wrist movements like extension, radial deviation, and forearm rotation. Tennis elbow is more likely to affect people over 40 years old. The main complaints are pain, reduced grip strength, and difficulty in performing daily activities, which can significantly impact one's ability to play sports.
In tennis elbow, microscopic injuries lead to a reduction in tenocytes (specialized cells in tendons) due to cell death. This negatively impacts collagen synthesis, the essential building block of tendons. The disorder involves vascular proliferation and hyaline degeneration of specific tendons in the elbow.
Most individuals with tennis elbow get better within a year, even without treatment. Traditional approaches include physiotherapy and anti-inflammatory medication. Corticosteroid injections, although commonly used, provide temporary pain relief, and their long-term use may weaken tendons and increase the risk of rupture.
